Henry Cavill

For years, the DC Universe has been a mess with all their internal issues after critical misfires like the Snyderverse with the exception of Gal Gadot starrer Wonder Woman.

Soon after the management at Warner Bros changed, fans expected their favourite Henry Cavill to return as Superman and thanks to Dwayne Johnson, he did, in fact, make a comeback in the mid-credit scene of Black Adam which released in October leaving many surprised and excited.

However, the excitement was short-lived as Black Adam didn’t churn the desired numbers at the box office and the studio hired James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new heads of DC Films.

Soon after the announcement, reports started coming around about the studio cancelling Wonder Woman 3, planning to pull the plug on the Aquaman franchiseafter the second part releases and several other alarming changes.

All this while, fans kept wondering if James Gunn is actually getting rid of the Snyderverse and the stars who were a part of the mix.

And the first tough decision has officially been announced now.

Taking to Twitter, James Gunn tweeted that he has the slate of DC films ready and will be announcing them officially next year.

However, he added that he is working on a Superman film but Henry Cavill won’t be returning.

His tweet read, “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.”

He continued, “Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”

And added, “But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

When asked if he will be writing the film, Gunn responded in affirmative and also confirmed that it won’t be an origin film.

A fan also asked Gunn if Ben Affleck can direct it, and he responded, “Met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project.”

Around the same time as James made the announcement on Twitter with a bit of sugarcoating, Henry decided to rip off the band-aid and broke the news of his exit as Superman.

His note read, “It’s sad news, everyone. I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. I respect that James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes. For those who have been by my side through the years
we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember
Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

Reacting to Cavill’s official exit after an official return, fans are clearly unhappy happy and are wondering where the DC Universe is heading towards now and what will happen to films like The Flash, Aquaman 2 and Shazam 2 which are up for release and are a part of the Snyderverse.

One user wrote, “So what happens with Shazam! 2,The Flash, and Aquaman 2 now? Are they just going to get released as a DCU is restarted and they’re obviously just too big of losses press restart on it all before releasing? Hard not to look past them in a sense, if they’re the abrupt end.”

A number of users also started a meme fest and it is quite hilarious.
