Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark had a Serena Williams message after the ESPYs that went viral

The 2024 ESPYs were on Thursday night, and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark made history. Becoming the first woman to ever win the Best Record Breaking ESPY, Clark’s NCAA scoring record performance in her final season at Iowa received the incredible honor.

Asked about this prior to Friday night’s game against the Phoenix Mercury, Clark was appreciative of the honor, but said she probably should not have been the first woman to receive it.

“Yeah, I didn’t know that until my little brother sent it to me this morning,” Clark said. “I think it’s super cool. It probably shouldn’t have been the first woman to ever win that award… How did Serena Williams never win that award? That’s crazy. Just thinking about things like that.”

Williams hosted the ESPYs show, and made a comment about Clark that went viral.

“You are the Larry Bird in that you are an amazing player, you have ties to Indiana, and white people are really crazy about you,” Williams said of Clark.

While some felt this was a playful jab, others took issue with it. That said, it seems Clark herself has nothing against Williams, as she openly praised the sports icon in her message on Friday.

As Clark so often does, the Fever star deflected the attention off herself in this instance to shed light on women’s sports as a whole. One of the driving forces behind women getting the recognition they deserve in sports, Clark recognizes the importance of bringing attention to this.
