Gervonta Davis’ coach challenges Floyd Mayweather to prove ‘greatness’ by testing his shoulder roll technique against ‘Tank’ | HO

Gervonta Davis was mentored by all-time great Floyd Mayweather after the pair met in 2015, with ‘Money’ helping his protege to reach his full potential as boxer. However, the pair split in 2022 after an extended period of conflict, as Mayweather also operated as Davis’ promoter until then.

With Mayweather having retired in 2017 after beating Conor McGregor via TKO, the 50-0 former world champion began taking part in exhibition fights, with his most recent bout coming in June, 2023.

‘Money’ has now been called out by a co-trainer of ‘Tank’, Kenny Ellis, who challenged the 47-year-old to come out of retirement and face off against the WBA lightweight champion.

Ellis challenged Davis’ former mentor to emulate heavyweight legend George Foreman’s achievement, when he defeated 26-year old Michael Moorer to become the WBA and IBF heavyweight champion at the age of 45.

He recently took to Instagram claiming that ‘Tank’ has an answer for Mayweather’s patented shoulder-roll defense, and posted the following:

“Gervonta Davis can decode the shouder roll. If Floyd can fight another exhibition he can fight another [professional] fight. If he’s [as] great as he says he is let’s stop spinning the fans – Gervonta vs. Floyd.”

Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko are likely to face-off next

Both Gervonta Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko hold titles in the 135-pound division, with ‘Tank’ the current WBA champion and ‘Loma’ the IBF title holder.

Following Davis’ recent victory over Frank Martin, which saw the Baltimore native score a brutal eighth-round knockout, it was revealed by promoter Bob Arum, while talking to Boxing Scene, that negotiations for a fight would restart.

Both champions have been two of the biggest names in boxing for many years, and are arguably the respective faces of boxing’s lower weight divisions. But despite calls from fans for a fight between the pair to be made, it has yet to materialize.

But following Arum’s recent comments, hope has been instilled once again that a mega-fight between Davis and Lomachenko could be made. TalkSPORT boxing editor Michael Benson took to X to repost Arum’s statement, writing this:

“Gervonta Davis vs Vasiliy Lomachenko talks are likely to resume within the next week for a potential WBA & IBF lightweight world title unification fight in November/December, Bob Arum has said.”
