Rare throwback footage shows young Patrick Mahomes sinking improbable game winner and dominating another sport | HO

Patrick Mahomes could have been a Major League Baseball player.

Mahomes is now a three-time Super Bowl champion and MVP, who’s become the new face of the NFL and helped the Kansas City Chiefs create a dynasty.

But what’s not nearly as well known about Mahomes is his basketball background.

The 28-year-old quarterback regularly tweets about the NBA and often focuses on Dallas Mavericks star forward Luka Doncic.

Mahomes was born in Tyler, Texas.

He also played college football and baseball at Texas Tech in Lubbock, so the Mavs fandom makes sense, especially considering that Kansas City doesn’t have an NBA team.

But few were previously aware of Showtime’s skills on the hardwood.

That changed on Wednesday, when the Chiefs posted an old, grainy video of a very young Mahomes sinking a game-winning shot.

Playing in a mostly empty large gym and wearing a yellow jersey, Mahomes dribbled the ball up court before unleashing a long throw that somehow sailed through the basket.

His form was fantastic, while his accuracy was top notch.

As soon as the big shot won the day, Mahomes and the young players around him began celebrating.

Mahomes is briefly seen in the video raising his arms, before the footage suddenly ends.

Now, he’s the best QB in the NFL and one of the most recognizable sports stars on the planet.

Mahomes has thrown for 28,424 yards and 219 touchdowns while going 74-22 as a starter in the regular season and 15-3 in the playoffs.

He also has built a business brand and paired with Travis Kelce to become a worldwide name.

“That’s my GOAT,” one fan tweeted.

“He throws everything like a baseball, LOL, but it works!” a second fan posted.

“He was looking right at the basket,” a third fan wrote.

“What an arm!” a fourth fan said.

Mahomes threw a brilliant no-hitter and struck out 16 batters in a high school baseball game.

So it’s easy to imagine the reigning Super Bowl champ in an alternate reality, with Mahomes following his father’s footsteps into MLB and starring on the diamond instead of in the NFL.

But an old, grainy video shows another little-seen side of Mahomes.

The face of pro football also was dangerous on the hardwood.
