Henry Cavill had to say goodbye to the DCEU’s Superman role with disappointment and regret.

Superman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is one of Henry Cavill’s most prominent roles to date. The actor once made fans extremely excited when he appeared in the post-credits scene of Black Adam, promising an exciting confrontation between these two omnipotent characters in the near future. However, after James Gunn and Peter Safran became the new presidents of DCU, they proposed a new project, a completely new plan – a plan that did not include Cavill as Superman.

Not only the audience but also those in the profession expressed regret when the talented actor had to say goodbye to the role of DC’s most famous superhero. Recently, director Matthew Vaughn spoke up to share that he wanted to bring Henry Cavill back to the big screen as Man of Steel, in a project that has no connection to DCU.

Vaughn has previously collaborated with Henry Cavill twice in the films Stardust and most recently Argylle, which will be released on February 10. Vaughn was also chosen by Warner Bros. to direct Man of Steel 2 – a project of the DCEU that never got released.

Specifically, sharing with the podcast BroBible’s Post Credit, Vaughn said: “I think (Superman) Red Son is one of the best comics I’ve ever read. And in today’s world, it’s more relevant than ever, because apathy will always bring more problems. And think about it, what if we did Red Son with Henry Cavill? That would be a very interesting movie.”

Currently, the role of Superman in the DCU has been given to David Corenswet, who will make his debut in the project Superman: Legacy, scheduled to be released in the summer of 2025. However, Warner Bros. still has a secret weapon in hand if they really want to bring Henry Cavill back to the role without affecting James Gunn’s cinematic universe plans. That is the Elseworlds series.

In simple terms, Elseworlds is like a collection of other mini-cinematic universes outside of the DCU, with films like Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Todd Phillips’ Joker. If Matthew Vaughn’s dream of making Superman: Red Son with Henry Cavill comes true, they could put that project into Elseworlds, and even develop more sequels if they want.

Elseworlds is also an opportunity for Cavill’s version of Superman to confront Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Black Adam to meet fans’ expectations. It can be considered the most complete and satisfying ending for the actor’s time with superhero movies, and also brings a more complete ending to the DCEU, which was “killed” unfinished. Obviously, compared to Aquaman & the Lost Kingdom, a Black Adam v Superman project will have much more weight to close this cinematic universe.

Only time will tell if Henry Cavill will have a future with Superman, a role he has played for nearly a decade. The actor is currently busy with his new projects, including the film Argylle, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and the Warhammer universe, where he is both an executive producer and a star.
