Henry Cavill has weighed in on rumours he could play the next James Bond, admitting he’s not sure if he’s “too old” for the role.

The Superman and The Witcher star’s name has long been high on the list of rumours following Daniel Craig’s departure as 007 three years ago.

Asked on The Rich Eisen Show about whether there was any Bond in his future, however, Cavill admitted he had “no idea”.

“All I’ve got to go off is the rumours. The same information you have,” he said. “Maybe I’m too old now, maybe I’m not. It’s up to [producers] Barbara Broccoli and Mike Wilson and we’ll see what their plans are.”

The interviewer then noted that his real-life character in new movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Gus March-Phillipps, is speculated to have inspired Ian Fleming’s Bond novels.

“Yeah, it seems like a good first step right?” Cavill then quipped in response.

The actor has previously expressed a keenness to take on the role – though he may face some competition from new favourite Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

The Kick-Ass star was reported last month to be on the verge of landing the role, with an offer allegedly made to him to take over as the spy. However, a production insider later claimed that there was “no truth in the rumours”.

If he does get confirmed, Taylor-Johnson would have the backing of former Bond Pierce Brosnan, who told The Ray D’Arcy Show last month: “I think the man has the chops and the talent and the charisma to play Bond, very much so.”
