Henry Cavill next to comic book version of Captain Britain

Henry Cavill has read the rumors about him playing Captain Britain — and he’s into the idea.

The actor spoke to The Hollywood Reporter as part of a major profile on his constantly escalating career. While Cavill seems to have put his Superman days behind him, he’s become a go-to name for genre action films and shows. He currently stars on The Witcher, which will soon release its second season, and he’ll return as Sherlock Holmes for the sequel to Enola Holmes. He’s also set to star in a reboot of Highlander, and there’s a good chance he’s not done with the Mission: Impossible franchise. But would the former DC leading man switch sides for Marvel Studios?

“I’m never going to say a Marvel character that is already being played by someone else because everyone’s doing such an amazing job,” Cavill said when asked if there was a Marvel character he’d like to play. “However, I have the internet, and I have seen the various rumors about Captain Britain, and that would be loads of fun to do a cool, modernized version of that — like the way they modernized Captain America. There’s something fun about that, and I do love being British.”

Though not a top-tier hero, fans have been clamoring for Captain Britain to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years. Not quite a U.K. replica of Captain America, Captain Britain debuted in a 1976 self-titled comic that introduced Brian Braddock as the magically powered protector of his homeland. Possessing abilities quite similar to Superman, Braddock’s stories often deal in magic and feature appearances by the likes of Merlyn, who granted the Captain his powers.

While there’s been no definitive proof that Captain Britain will join the MCU, there have been teases. In 2017, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said the company had discussed the possibility of introducing Brian Braddock. A year later, Orlando Bloom threw his name into the ring for the role. But it was 2019’s Avengers: Endgame that made fans perk up.

In the scene where Steve sees Peggy Carter through a window while back in the ’70s, the audio is largely indecipherable. But the closed captions reveal that Peggy is discussing a “Braddock” who hasn’t checked in. While it’s a difficult-to-discern Easter egg, it’s the first tease that some version of Captain Britain might exist in the MCU, albeit back in the ’70s. But with magic involved, anything is possible.

It’s also worth noting that the Peggy Carter version of Captain America in What If…?, which is MCU canon, is called Captain Carter rather than the more obvious Captain Britain. This could hint that Marvel Studios has other plans for that moniker.
