Boxer Anthony Joshua Wants to Open Care Home for Retired Boxers

Anthony Joshua has revealed his plans to open a care home for retired boxers who are struggling with health issues. In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Joshua expressed his concern for the well-being of ex-boxers and his desire to provide them with the support they need.

Joshua, who won a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics, has firsthand experience of the challenges faced by professional boxers. “The one thing I would hope for is to keep my health intact,” he said, acknowledging the risks inherent in his sport. “Because it’s your health that is the most important thing you’re putting on the line.”

The boxer, who is now 34 years old, reflected on the lack of attention given to the health and well-being of former fighters. “We can notice it in fighters when their health is deteriorating, but we never actually talk about it among ourselves,” he said. “All we focus on is winning.”

Joshua’s plans to open a care home are part of his efforts to leave a lasting legacy in the sport that transformed his life. “That would be part of my boxing legacy – that I gave something back to the sport that made me,” he said.

The care home idea came about through discussions with Joshua’s former boxing coach, John Oliver. “They suffer by themselves, so we’ve been speaking about opening up a care home,” Joshua explained.

Joshua’s own journey to success was not without its challenges. As a teenager, he had run-ins with the police and was even banned from his hometown of Watford. It was his cousin Ben who introduced him to the Finchley Amateur Boxing Club, an experience that Joshua credits with turning his life around.

“I’m really glad I found boxing – it changed me a lot,” he said. “You can turn your life around if you focus.”

Joshua’s commitment to giving back to the sport that has shaped his life is admirable. By opening a care home for retired boxers, he hopes to provide a safe and supportive environment for those who have dedicated their careers to the sport they love.
