‘Rocking slippers’ – Conor McGregor targets summer return despite being unable to wear shoes due to broken toe

Conor McGregor doesn’t expect to be sidelined for much longer – even though his foot is badly swollen right now.

The Irish MMA legend hasn’t fought since breaking his leg during a trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021.

McGregor was booked to return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 on June 29, but their fight was called off after the former dual-weight champion broke his pinky toe.

On Saturday night, McGregor attended a Bellator MMA event in Dublin to cheer on his teammate, Sinead Kavanagh, who suffered a second-round submission loss against Arlene Blencowe.

‘Notorious’ was wearing slippers as he’s currently unable to fit in trainers or shoes – but he’s still confident he’ll be ready to compete two months from now.

“August or September I’d love,” McGregor told Severe MMA when asked about his potential return date.

“You know the way it is. I’m in recovery mode. It happened three weeks ago to the day. And I’m still here rocking around in the slippers.

“They are not bad slippers, thankfully. They are cosy enough, but I can’t get into a shoe yet.”

The 35-year-old revealed he went to desperate lengths to try to remain on his comeback card. Unfortunately, he thinks it may have backfired.

McGregor added: “They put stem cells into my foot.”

“They came and took it from the back and put it into my foot. They put it into my foot, 20 milligrams from my own back, from the bone marrow.

“Right into the break. Then there was a little bit left over, I said, ‘Yeah, lob it into my shoulder. I’m feeling a bit sore’

“My shoulder is actually feeling amazing. That stem cell is good stuff. I’m after really getting an eye-opener with that stem cell, but my f***ing toe is sore.

“I don’t know if the stem cell into the toe was the right move. You know the way chicks put the filler in their face? My f***ing baby toe looks like that.

“I don’t think it’s swelling anymore, it’s the stem cell in my toe. I’m gonna have a swollen toe all the time now. I don’t know. I’m just recovering and taking it day by day.”

Dana White was much more pessimistic about McGregor’s return date when asked to respond to his comments at UFC Saudi Arabia.
